CT Scan
Service Description
A CT scan, or Computed Tomography Scan, is a medical imaging technique that uses x-rays to create detailed 3D images of an animal's body. It's particularly good for looking at bones, noses, lungs and for looking for cancer spread. It's good at looking for unusual blood vessel anatomy (esp portosystemic shunts) and to look for where the ureters (pipes taking urine from the kidneys to the bladder) implant when a young patient is incontinent. It helps surgeons plan complicated surgery and allows us to assess whether surgery is indicated or not in some cases. Our CTs are done at a local hospital at the end of the human list ie in the late afternoon. We usually need a few days' notice to set up an appointment. The patient needs to be sedated / lightly anaesthetised for the procedure. (S)he is dropped off at our practice, we preplace a catheter into the vein and transport them / her to and from the hospital. Patients usually recover quickly and are almost always collected from our practice later the same day.
